Weekend Happenings and Should I join the Y?

Happy Monday! For the most part this ended up being a lazy weekend for myself and the hubs but it’s what we needed so I don’t mind. On Friday we wandered around Lake Elkhorn and finished our walk right at sunset – it will always be my favorite part of the day. It had been a grey day so it was especially lucky we got to see this beautiful view.

One one side of the lake there’s an exercise park so we played on a lot of the stations. When I say we, I mostly mean Brady did because I kept asking him to when I couldn’t, lol.

That’s a look of true love right there.

After our walk, we came home and had a fire and snuggled on our ridiculously uncomfortable couch for the evening.

Fireplace

It’s our special tradition to have a fire on Friday nights and we’ve done it every week since we moved into our apartment. We feel pretty lucky to have found this place because how often does an apartment have a fireplace??

On Saturday we were supposed to go have a family get-together at my grandmother’s house but because of potential ice (that didn’t come), everyone decided to cancel so Brady and I went to my dad’s house instead.  Saturday night was another evening of just lazing around at home and cuddling my snuggly cat. About 75% of the photos on my phone are of my cat. I’m always snapping and sending photos of her to my sister to make her jealous.

Oh, and she’s a pig.

Sunday was clean the house and go on a date day. We wanted to go see a movie without paying $13 per ticket so we went to a matinee and one of the theaters a little farther away and we saw La La Land. In case you haven’t heard of it yet, it’s a musical set in modern times with Ryan Gosling as an aspiring jazz pianist and Emma Stone as an aspiring actress. It’s a very artsy sort of movie which is probably why it ran away with all the awards at the Golden Globes and is sure to get at least a few Academy Awards. We both enjoyed it even if it didn’t end as we expected it too. We agreed it was a one time see sort of movie but we liked it a lot.

Question: Am I the only one who hates sitting through 20 minutes of trailers before a movie?

We wandered the mall for an hour after the movie but headed home pretty quick so Brady could watch his Cowboys and finish doing laundry and such.

So my big question of the week is should I join the Y? I’m looking for other people’s experiences and whether or not this is a good deal.

Since we’ve moved, I’ve been looking for a place to go swimming. The place I used to go was near where I lived and work but now we’re at least 25 minutes away and though the pools up here are expensive, it’s still not worth it to drive down there. I finally figured out that the YMCA is 10 minutes away and has a pool, but they don’t have daily passes and you have to have a membership. So now I’m weighing the membership deal. If I sign up before I turn 25, I don’t have any joining fees and I’ll have a couple months paying $38 because of my age and then it goes up to $53.

We have a small gym at our apartments so while the Y has a better gym, it’s not worth it to go just for that. It looks like they have a good class list of Yoga, Pilates, Spin,  and Zumba among other classes. So I figure that if you price a swim or a class session on the cheap side of $5 per class, I need to be going at least 8-10 times a month to make the price justifiable.

I think it’s worth it because to get all these amenities would be way too expensive somewhere else but I know I’d enjoy it more if I had someone to go with. I want to swim and adding in my pick of classes really seems worth it but I’m not sure if I’m going to be the only “chubby” person in a yoga class, or the only person my age, or any other thing that would make me stand out, feel awkward, and not want to come back.

This is why I’m looking for opinions of others with experience! Even if it’s not the Y and just your regular gym, I’m really looking for insight into this situation.

Help.

I want to see La La Land so bad! I mean hello, it has one of my Ryan’s in it! 😉
Ok, the YMCA? DO IT!!! I work at the Y in my area as a personal trainer and I am not big into taking classes. But here its so comfortable and there are various age groups in each class. It’s so nice! I have started teaching a few small group classes and have no problem modifying exercises for various levels of my participants. Plus, it’s fun!
