Hiking Sugarloaf Mountain, A Scenic Maryland Hike

The Olympics have ended, school has started, and people are already acting like it’s fall now! Stop it! I’m loving summer and though the temps are still steamy, I’m not wishing away the warm weather anytime soon. Though Saturday was a hot day, Brady and I headed out towards Frederick to hike Sugarloaf Mountain. I’ve only been here once and I was probably 9-10 years old.

There are short trails on the top of Sugarloaf Mountain around the summit as well as longer ones out on the ridge and base of the mountain. We chose to hike on the blue trail clockwise which was supposed to be a 5-mile hike. There are nice views out over Maryland farms at a few different points along the trail.

I drank a bottle of water before the hike and we carried 2 liters of water with us but we probably should have carried more because the heat index was high and we were dripping in sweat. We used a couple of Nuun electrolyte tabs to flavor the water and give an extra boost.

The last 3/4 of a mile was hard because I was tired, hungry, and I was experiencing some back pain. The trail was very steep and rocky in places, but there were also stretches of even terrain. Overall, I enjoyed the hike a lot and I look forward to doing it again.

There aren’t any Cava’s nearby to us, but my sister has raved about the amazingness of this place so we stopped at one for dinner. It was so so good! My tastebuds can’t stop thinking about it. You build your own bowl similar to Chipotle but instead of Mexican style food, it’s Mediterranean. I had a greens and grains bowl with falafel, tzatziki, kalamata olives, tomato, cucumber, cabbage slaw, feta, cauli/quinoa salad, and greek vinaigrette with a side pita.

Sunday was a lazy day but Brady and I went to REI to read books and to gawk at gear for 2.5 hours. I really want to do a weekend backpacking trip this fall! We’d have to borrow a lot of stuff because we can’t afford to buy it outright, but we’ve been talking about backpacking for over a year now! Hopefully, we can pull it off.

We wandered through a nearby furniture store before heading home and I found the chair of my dreams. I need one just like this because it was so perfect and comfy. It was like a cocoon you could snuggle into.

I hope you enjoyed your weekend as much as we did! Today I’m going to be working with a class of 3-5-year-olds at school so wish me luck (and energy). Happy Monday!

Let me know in the comments about what you were up to this weekend and give me some pointers for planning our first backpacking trip!
