Oh my goodness, it’s August! and we’re 4 days out from the triathlon, eeeek! I had a little laugh over my July goals as I was looking back but I’m still feeling pretty optimistic about continuing to work towards a few of them.
This were a little derailed this month due to back pain, I’ve been dealing with more significant issues through training this year than I was last year so it’s been pretty limiting on how much I can put into training.
July Goals
- Get a consistent running pace close to or around 10:00 min/mi.
- Focus on improving swim form and get closer to a consistent 2:00-2:10/100m pace.
- Hill climbing and overall body strength.
- Drink more water.
- Eat healthier.
Race Goals
- Swim (1000m): 22:00
- T1: 3:00
- Bike (16 miles): 1:05:00
- T2: 1:30
- Run (3.4 miles): 35:00
- Overall 2:11:30
I suppose it wasn’t all that laughable, but if you’ve been following along, my run paces aren’t like that at all. I’d say I can pump out a good short run at an 11:30 min/mi pace but I have had limited improvement due to my pain. I’d still love to get to a 5k pace under 10:00 min/mi but it may take some time to get there.
Otherwise, I’ve generally headed upwards at least a little on the rest of the goals.
I laid out my race goal times last month and while I’d love to say I’m going to hit them, I don’t think there’s any way I’m going to be able to go under 40 minutes for the run. I’m going to say I’d be pretty lucky to beat my run time from last year due to everything that’s been going on with me.
At this point I’m willing my back to stay well enough to be able to get me through Sunday because the last few days have been pretty rough. I’ve been sitting a lot over the last week and sleeping for a week in a hard and unfamiliar bed wreaked a bit of havoc on my temperamental spine.
August Goals!
- My top priority for this month is to keep my back happy and build core strength through my glutes, back and abs.
- Continue to build on my fitness.
- Significantly reduce sugar intake.
- Work towards a regular bedtime and wake up routine and getting healthier sleep.
I don’t want to work on too many things at once but I do want to make these few a priority. I’m trying to focus on overall health and not just individual areas like exercise.
Of all of these goals, sugar is going to be a really hard one for me. Do you know how addictive sugar can be? I often excuse it by saying that I worked for it, or I’m on a date so it’s okay… but there’s always an excuse and I need to start being more mindful about what I put in my body. It’s going to be hard, but food is something that I struggle with a lot and working on this goal is going to be a huge step in the right direction.
Every day is working towards a happier, healthier me so here’s to August and continuing on towards those goals!
What are your goals for this month?
Do you struggle with sugar addiction? How do you deal with sugar intake?
What is your favorite activity or thing from this last month?

I think your goals sound smart. You’re right, you can’t take on too much at once or else it’s not sustainable.
I hope I have a more successful August as far as goals go because I fell a little short with July. It’s always a work in progress and I keep reminding myself I need to be kind to myself.
I’m trying to cut back on sugar, as well, and be more consistent with my workouts. I hope your back stops giving you trouble. Good luck at the tri!
Thanks! 🙂 I’m really hoping it goes well. Sugar has been a huge struggle for me over the years and today was sort of a fail, but I’m trying to stay accountable and really make some progress with this.
You have some fantastic goals! I’m sorry to hear about your back, I hope you’re recovering well. My July wasn’t as great as I thought so I scaled back a bit in August so that it’d be more realistic to achieve. Overall I want to stay in good marathon training shape!
Thank you! I try to set realistic goals but I’m not always the best at it. I hope you have a much better August with your new goals in place 🙂 Marathons are hard so make sure to be good to yourself! Can’t wait to hear how it goes for you.
I need to work on the whole bedtime and sleep thing too- seems to be the one thing that I can’t make happen 🙁
It’s really hard! For me it gets more difficult the later I start going to bed because then it’s hard to fall asleep earlier. Sleep is so important though so I’m trying to make better habits.
Hi Meagan, my goals of next three months is 5k run but its realy hard I know.
Your goals is really inspiring. Thank you for share.
