Life, Vacation

My Husband is now a Doctor of Physical Therapy!!!

I don’t think that title is enough to exclaim how excited I am and how proud I am of my husband for passing his boards and graduating after a long and hard 6 years of study!!! It’s been a long time coming and I’m a very happy wife after this weekend celebrating my husband.

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Graduation Regalia

Brady took his board exam on the 19th of July and found out his results on last Tuesday after a long week of waiting and he found out that he PASSED! He was able to go into graduation weekend knowing all he had to do was lock down a job. Almost half of his class of 38 took the exam since the next one isn’t offered until October.

It’s been a long week here in Michigan and especially this weekend so this is going to be a 2 part episode featuring lots of ice cream and a couple workouts from Monday-Friday.

Monday

After class on Monday, we went out to St. Joe for a run and some ice cream. St. Joseph is supposedly the most romantic town in Michigan, and it is a super sweet little place. It’s a got a cute “downtown” area with boutiques and a really pretty path along the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. There are so many things that make this a sweet beach town and great vacay spot in the summer. I love it muchly.

One of the things they do is a summer art theme and this year I think it was something about bugs and they had these adorable sculptures around on the streets. Here is one of them based on “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”

The Hungry Caterpillar Sculpture

We went for a short 1.87 mi run-walk along my favorite trail before cooling off with a sweet treat.

Cabanas has the best ice cream in town. Not even in town though, it’s probably the best ice cream I’ve ever had from anywhere.

Tuesday

Tuesday afternoon I went for a quick swim on campus before the pool closed to lap swimmers. I thought I had to 1:30 because that was the posted time, but I was stopped at 1:25 and a lifeguard said, “for future reference, we like to close up about 5 minutes early.” I don’t know why I didn’t say no because I’d paid to get in thinking that I’d get a 25 minute swim and I only got 20. That really irritated me for the rest of the afternoon. I should have stood up for myself…

I ended up swimming 925yds (about 850m) in 19:28 minutes. I’m still hoping for good results on race day.

Tuesday ended up being a mini tri day because when we came back “home” after classes, I jumped on the spin bike for a 20 minute fast pace, interval spin ride. Then I switched out my shoes and did a 1.15 mile run to test out running with wobbly legs.

Wednesday

Wednesday evening was a banquet put on by the PT department to celebrate the end of their time in the program and becoming PTs.

They did presented a few speeches and slideshows to reminisce on the journey they’ve had together as a PT family and we enjoyed some delicious food. I had the best salad I may have ever had at the event. I think it was a homemade ranch dressing and it was nothing like I’ve ever had before.

Thursday

On Thursday morning I was planning on going for a run as soon as I dropped Brady off for class since it was under 70 degrees and the humidity was a little lower. Well… I got distracted and I didn’t end up getting ready to go until just after 10 and it was SO. HUMID. It was over 80 at this point and over 80% humidity. Add in the lack of shade and it was a difficult run.

I was also struggling because I hadn’t eaten at all since the banquet the night before and I was starving. Not a smart move but I tried it anyways. I stopped at 2 miles because I think I was going to be sick if I kept trying to push on. I averaged a 13:30 pace for the excursion (including walking).

I snuck in to watch Brady practicing some Kinesio taping.

Before graduation practice we did a quick run out to St. Joseph for some amaaaazing sorbet. It tasted like the fruit had just been picked and then turned into sorbet.

We were treated to this sunset on the drive home.

Friday

On Friday morning, Hanna and I found out that we were going to be in the second to last wave for the triathlon which is a bit discouraging to Hanna because she’s nervous of being the last swimmer in the water. I think she definitely has it in her to push out a 40-45 minute swim or even faster if she’s able to keep calm and keep moving. (You can do it Nani!)

It’s a big bummer for me because depending on the weather for the day, it’s probably going to be super hot by the time I come in for the run. It would have been nicer to be coming in an hour sooner like I was last year.

So that’s part 1 of the story and tomorrow morning I’m going to share some photos of our amazing weekend including his white coat ceremony and our afternoon out on the lake today.

Enjoy your Monday!

What did you study in college?

Any encouragement you can offer my sister to help her with her nerves?

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
